Google Crowned “King of Malware” – Has Two Times More Malware than Bing, Yahoo! and Twitter Combined

Barracuda Labs Issues 2010 Midyear Security Report, Presents Findings at DefCON 18 and Security BSides Las Vegas
Campbell, Calif. (July 28, 2010) – Barracuda Networks Inc., a leading provider of content security, data protection and application delivery solutions, today released its Barracuda Labs 2010 Midyear Security Report, revealing data from two key areas: search engine malware and Twitter use and crime rate. The company is presenting this data at Security BSides Las Vegas and DefCON 18 this week in Las Vegas. The full report is available at the company’s security research portal at http://barracudalabs.com.
Searching for Malware
Barracuda Labs conducted a study across Bing, Google, Twitter and Yahoo!, over a roughly two-month period. The analysis reviews more than 25,000 trending topics and nearly 5.5 million search results. The purpose of the study was to analyze trending topics on popular search engines to understand the scope of the problem and to identify the types of topics used by malware distributors. The results will be presented at DefCON 18 on Saturday, July 31, at 11:00 a.m. PT, at the Riviera Hotel & Casino.
Key highlights from the search engine study include:

Overall, Google takes the crown for malware distribution – turning up more than twice the amount of malware as Bing, Twitter and Yahoo! combined when searches on popular trending topics were performed. Google presents at 69 percent; Yahoo! at 18 percent; Bing at 12 percent; and Twitter at one percent.
The average amount of time for a trending topic to appear on one of the major search engines after appearing on Twitter varies tremendously: 1.2 days for Google, 4.3 days for Bing, and 4.8 days for Yahoo!
Over half of the malware found was between the hours of 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. GMT.
The top 10 terms used by malware distributors include the name of a NFL player, three actresses, a Playboy Playmate and a college student who faked his way into Harvard.

The Darkside of Twitter
Barracuda Labs analyzed more than 25 million Twitter accounts, both legitimate and malicious. The purpose of this part of the study was to measure and analyze account behavior on Twitter in order to model normal user behavior and identify features that are strong indicators of illegitimate account use. The study reviews several key areas including True Twitter Users1, Twitter Crime Rate2, and Tweet Number3. The results will be presented at Security Bsides Las Vegas on Wednesday, July 28, at 3:00 p.m. PT, at the 2810 Resort.
Key highlights from the Twitter research include:

In general, activity is increasing on Twitter: more users are coming online; True Twitter Users are tweeting more often, and even casual users are becoming more active. As users become more active, the malicious activity also increases.
Only 28.87 percent of Twitter users are actual True Twitter Users.
Half of Twitter users tweet less than once a day, yet one in 10 users tweet five or more times a day and 30 percent of Twitter accounts have never tweeted.
One in every eight Twitter users has at least 10 times more followers than they are following.
Only one in 10 users is following more than 100 users, and almost half are following less than five.
The Twitter Crime Rate for the first half of 2010 was 1.67 percent.

“Our study shows that attackers have serious efforts devoted towards getting in front of the billions of eyeballs that are using search engines everyday and the millions of users that are connecting on social networks like Twitter,” said Dr. Paul Judge, chief research officer and VP at Barracuda Networks. “Therefore, we continue to analyze their approaches and build new techniques to find them and protect users.”

Campbell, Calif., July 20, 2010 – Barracuda Networks Inc., a leading provider of content security, data protection and application delivery solutions, today announced new integration features for the Barracuda Web Application Firewall that extend centralization of front-end access controls, simplify management of production Web applications, and bolster overall security for enterprise networks and assets.
The Barracuda Web Application Firewall protects Web applications and Web services from malicious attacks, and also increases the performance and scalability of these applications. The new features enhance centralized access controls by offering integration with two major front-end access control systems for identity management and multi-factor authentication.

RSA SecurID® – A powerful two-factor authentication solution that provides a more reliable level of user authentication than reusable passwords. Barracuda Web Application Firewall customers can integrate easily with RSA SecurID to enforce strong authentication before granting access to secure portions of various Web applications.
CA SiteMinder® – Provides centralized Web access management that enables user authentication and single sign-on, authentication management, policy-based authorization, identity federation and auditing of access to Web applications and portals. Barracuda Web Application Firewall customers can leverage CA SiteMinder for single sign-on capabilities for protected Web applications.

The new centralized front-end access control integrations extend the Barracuda Web Application Firewall’s powerful capabilities beyond LDAP, RADIUS, PKI and other authentication schemes. By combining centralized access control capabilities with protocol inspection, organizations can more easily protect against threats including data leaks and access to unauthorized URLs without any special application-specific tuning or configuration. The Barracuda Web Application Firewall streamlines security and credential management through a central configuration management interface, ensuring consistent enforcement of access control and authentication across all Web applications.
“Web application security today means more than simply providing application security protocol and content inspection,” said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management for Barracuda Networks. “The Barracuda Web Application Firewall goes beyond traditional Web application point solutions and offers customers a full suite of application delivery capabilities, including load balancing, access control and acceleration, making it the most comprehensive Web application firewall on the market.”

Barracuda Networks’ ‘Blue’ is the New ‘Green’

Company Launches Barracuda Virtual Appliances
Campbell, Calif., July 14, 2010 – Barracuda Networks Inc., a leading provider of content security, data protection and application delivery solutions, today announced plans to broaden its virtual product portfolio to include its full line of solutions, beginning with the worldwide roll out of the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall Vx and Barracuda SSL VPN Vx. Today’s announcement expands the company’s market-leading product portfolio across a variety of delivery models including appliance, virtual, SaaS and hybrid.
“Virtual appliances are sparking interest for many of our customers that are extending the ‘green IT’ and management benefits of their server virtualization initiatives,” said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management for Barracuda Networks. “Barracuda Virtual Appliances will integrate seamlessly into the virtualization framework while combining the same powerful technology, ease of use and value found in the full range of Barracuda Networks hardware appliances.”
A number of drivers are contributing to the move toward virtual appliance deployment by Barracuda Networks customers:

Easy to use and deploy. Virtual appliances can be deployed for high availability and can easily scale as capacity requirements grow without changing hardware or software. Virtual appliances are also easier to move, back up and restore.
Green tech initiatives. By consolidating servers and the network infrastructure into fewer physical servers, organizations can save physical space in their datacenters and server rooms as well as reduce the amount of energy required for heating and cooling physical infrastructures.
Reduced TCO. Virtualization can reduce the data center costs associated with implementing and maintaining additional infrastructure hardware.

A recent survey by IDC (December 2009, IDC #220767, Virtual Security Appliance Survey: What’s Really Going On?) found that more than 70 percent of respondents – comprised of organizations of all sizes and across all industries – are including virtual appliance deployment into general IT budgets or within existing security appliance budgets. The survey also indicated a nearly 60/40 split between SMBs and enterprises that have already deployed virtual appliances for security applications.
“We typically tend to see the SMB market move toward new technology adoption more quickly than the enterprise space, in large part because they are able to make swift decisions and can be very nimble when it comes to shifting technology,” said Chris Christiansen, program vice president of Security Products and Services for IDC. “In this sense, Barracuda Networks can capture the initiative in supplying virtual appliances due to their exceptional success in the SMB space with their appliance offerings.
“On the other hand we are also finding that virtual appliance adoption across a range of enterprises is strong and we expect continued adoption of this approach will continue into the foreseeable future,” added Christiansen. “This gives Barracuda Networks a unique opportunity to service the enterprise market as it makes the shift toward virtualization as well. Overall, this is a very solid, strategic move for them.”
Scalability, Flexibility and Affordability
Barracuda Virtual Appliances offer customers the flexibility to deploy the same powerful, plug-and-play features found in Barracuda Networks’ appliances on hardware of their choice or into existing virtual frameworks. Barracuda Virtual Appliances currently support VMware ESX/ESXi platforms, with support for other virtualization platforms planned in the coming months.
In addition, Barracuda Virtual Appliances can be easily scaled for performance and increased capacity as the organization grows while maintaining low TCO. Barracuda Virtual Appliances are available with a low, upfront base license and subscription fees based on user-bands.
“Barracuda Networks is well-known for offering unprecedented value in its hardware appliances and we are staying true to that philosophy with our virtual appliances,” said Pao.
New Opportunities for Channel Partners
Today’s announcement creates new sales opportunities for Barracuda Networks’ channel partners who can now offer a range of solutions in form factors that best suit the customer’s network needs. Barracuda Networks has enhanced its partner program to better accommodate the customer buying process for virtual appliances.
“We remain dedicated to the success of our channel partners and will commit additional resources to ensure that they are equipped to sell our complete product portfolio, including our new virtual offerings,” said Pao. Barracuda Networks' expansive channel includes more than 5,000 active partners worldwide.
The Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall Vx and Barracuda SSL VPN Vx join the Barracuda NG Firewall and Barracuda Purewire Web Security Service – both of which were added to the product portfolio through separate corporate acquisitions over the past year and which also have virtual appliance components.
Pricing and Availability
Both the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall Vx and Barracuda SSL VPN Vx can be downloaded as part of a free 30-day evaluation period at www.barracuda.com/virtualization. Pricing for the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall Vx includes a one-time base license fee and an annual subscription of $180 per 100 users per year. Pricing for the Barracuda SSL VPN Vx includes a one-time base license fee and an annual subscription ranging from $120 per year for 10 and $3,000 per year for 250 users. International pricing and availability varies based on region. Other Barracuda Networks solutions will be made available as virtual appliances in the coming months.

Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall Protects Against Data Leaks with Broader Outbound Email Content Filtering Capabilities

New Features Augment Spam Scanning, Virus Checking and Content Filtering Policy Enforcement for Both Inbound and Outbound Email
Campbell, Calif., June 30, 2010 – Barracuda Networks Inc., today announced new features to its flagship Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall that enhance full inbound and outbound email scanning from the same appliance. The new features extend the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall’s capabilities beyond spam and virus scanning for outbound email, which can safeguard an organization’s email reputation, and include broader content inspection based on policy for both inbound and outbound email on a single appliance. These enhancements ensure that confidential or sensitive information is not distributed outside the organization.
“It is crucial for organizations, especially within highly regulated industries, to have the ability to protect intellectual property and other sensitive information from being distributed,” said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management for Barracuda Networks. “The new Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall extends our powerful content scanning features and makes it easier for customers to manage both inbound and outbound email filtering from the same appliance.”
Enforce Corporate Policies through Outbound Email Scanning
The new Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall allows administrators to define policies to prevent confidential or sensitive information from leaving the organization. For example, hospitals and other healthcare organizations that must comply with HIPAA policies that mandate the confidentiality of sensitive patient information such as social security or credit card numbers as well as personal health information can now apply pre-defined dictionaries to outbound email scanning to ensure compliance. In addition, administrators can set up separate rules for inbound and outbound filtering, and review the outbound email quarantine for any policy violations before delivery.
Enterprise-Ready Management
Additionally, the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall now offers increased granularity of its roles-based administration interface, enabling assignment of sender and recipient policies on a per-domain basis. These administration enhancements are useful for larger organizations that delegate administration across different divisions and for service providers offering granular policy controls directly to their end customers.
Pricing and Availability
The Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall firmware release 4.1 is immediately available in eight models with prices ranging from $699 to $89,999. International pricing and availability varies based on region. For more information please visit www.barracudanetworks.com/spam.
About the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall
The Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall is available in eight models with no per user fees. A single Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall supports up to 100,000 active users, and multiple units can be clustered together for even greater capacity and availability. Its architecture leverages 12 defense layers: denial of service and security protection, rate control, IP analysis, sender authentication, recipient verification, virus protection, policy (user-specified rules), Fingerprint Analysis, Intent Analysis, Image Analysis, Bayesian Analysis, and a Spam Rules Scoring engine. In addition, the entire Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall line features simultaneous inbound and outbound email filtering with the inclusion of sophisticated outbound email filtering techniques, such as rate controls, domain restrictions, user authentication (SASL), keyword and attachment blocking, triple-layer virus blocking, and remote user support for outbound email filtering. The Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall’s layered approach minimizes the processing of each email, which yields the performance required to process millions of messages per day.

Barracuda Message Archiver Extends Beyond Email to Archive All Microsoft Exchange Items

New Capabilities Improve Storage Efficiency by Archiving Calendar Items, Contacts and Tasks
Campbell, Calif., April 28, 2010 – Barracuda Networks Inc. today announced new features for the Barracuda Message Archiver that allow users to archive calendar items, contacts and tasks from Microsoft Exchange making it the first appliance- based solution to offer this capability.
This new capability complements the Barracuda Message Archiver’s Exchange stubbing feature, helping administrators to minimize a user’s Exchange storage footprint. With the Exchange stubbing feature, administrators can increase storage efficiency by moving email attachments from the Exchange server to the Barracuda Message Archiver while maintaining seamless access to those attachments for end users.
“The new features in the Barracuda Message Archiver coupled with attachment stubbing, combine to make a powerful solution for administrators looking to enhance operational efficiency of their Microsoft Exchange deployments,” said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management for Barracuda Networks. “By enabling users to access online archives of all their Microsoft Exchange items, they can satisfy their users’ need to access data while better managing Exchange mailbox sizes and their associated storage costs.”
By archiving all Exchange data, the Barracuda Message Archiver enables administrators to eliminate the use of PST files. PST files are archival files created in the Microsoft Exchange environment that contain emails, calendar items, contacts and tasks and are typically stored on a user’s laptop or desktop to reduce the amount of data stored on the server. Organizations have been looking for ways to eliminate PST because they are hard to manage, prone to corruption and pose a security risk if accessed by an unauthorized user.
While competing solutions focus only on archiving emails, both from PST files and from Exchange directly, the Barracuda Message Archiver’s ability to archive calendar items, contacts and tasks in addition to emails allow administrators to import all items stored in a PST file directly to the appliance for easy search and retrieval. In addition, offloading all Microsoft Exchange data to the Barracuda Message Archiver significantly improves email server performance by allowing administrators to better manage the size of mailboxes and keep the Microsoft Exchange server running efficiently.
The latest Barracuda Message Archiver release also includes a tool that allows administrators to import emails from IBM Lotus Domino NSF files. This import capability ensures that organizations using an IBM Lotus Domino server will be able to archive, search and retrieve historical email.
Pricing and Availability
The latest features are immediately available to current and future Barracuda Message Archiver customers. The Barracuda Message Archiver is available in six models with prices starting at $1,999 with no per user fees. International pricing and availability varies based on region. For more information, please visit www.barracudanetworks.com/archiver

Barracuda Networks Launches Barracuda Backup Server 990 Featuring Increased Storage Capacity for Local Data Backup

Additional Barracuda Backup Service Enhancements to Include Faster Data Transfer to the Cloud for Offsite Storage
Campbell, Calif., April 8, 2010 – Barracuda Networks Inc. today launched the Barracuda Backup Server 990 with 24 terabytes of internal storage, making it the ideal on-premises solution for organizations requiring local backup for large volumes of data. Now available in six models and combined with the Barracuda Backup Subscription to provide offsite backup storage in the cloud, the Barracuda Backup Service is the most complete backup and disaster recovery solution available for organizations today.
“As organizations continue to migrate their data protection strategies from legacy tape backups, Barracuda Networks has seen greater demand for high density disk-based data protection,” said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management for Barracuda Networks. “With the Barracuda Backup Server 990, we continue to take advantage of both the advantages and economics of modern disk storage technologies.”
The increased onsite storage capacity offered with the Barracuda Backup Server 990 is crucial for organizations like Ohio-based American Motorcyclist Association that require a reliable solution for storing financial and racing data, as well as membership data for its 235,000 members.
"Protecting over 85 years of member data is critical to the American Motorcyclist Associations' business,” said Robert Kluczynski, director of IT and project management for the American Motorcyclist Association. “The Barracuda Backup Server 990 product has reduced our data management costs by 25 percent and allowed us to focus more time on member-centric activities. Barracuda Networks proved to be our number one choice for data backup and has exceeded our expectations in customer service and response time as well.”
Refining offsite data transfer and deduplication capabilities
The Barracuda Backup Service now features more efficient backup transfer methods by better utilizing the available bandwidth between the backup server and the cloud. This makes it possible to transfer large amounts of changing data offsite in shorter times than traditional solutions. The Barracuda Backup Service now provides new data deduplication functionality for Windows server backups.
The Barracuda Backup Service now offers full open file backup support which allows administrators to back up files that have been locked by the operating system for improved data protection. The Barracuda Backup Service also increases the efficiency of the local network by starting the deduplication process at the agent, eliminating the need to send as much network traffic across the local network.
Formerly restricted to Windows system support for Windows Server 2003 and 2008, upgrades to the Barracuda Backup Agent software now support Windows 7 and provide full system backup and restore,

Twitter Makes its Red Carpet Debut for Celebrities and Criminals

Barracuda Labs Launches New Security Information Portal, Reveals Only 21 Percent of Twitter Users are ‘True Twitter Users’
Campbell, Calif., March 10, 2010 – Barracuda Networks Inc. today released its Barracuda Labs 2009 Annual Report, revealing data from three areas: Twitter trends and tracking, Web threats and trends, and email spam and viruses. The report is available at the company’s newly launched security research portal at http://barracudalabs.com.
The report drills down into 2009’s fastest growing social networking application Twitter, and reviews growth drivers, usage trends and the overall Twitter crime rate. Barracuda Labs analyzed more than 19 million Twitter accounts, both legitimate and malicious, for frequency and content of tweets, user-to-user interactions, and each account’s overall activity level.
Key highlights from the report include:

Only 21 percent of Twitter users are actual True Twitter Users1.
Overall, users are becoming more active on Twitter.
49 percent of Twitter users, and 48 of the top 100 most followed Twitter users, joined during the Twitter Red Carpet Era2, indicating the significant impact celebrities have on the social networking landscape as they bring their real-world fans over to Twitter.
The Twitter growth rate spiked at 21.17 percent in April 2009 due to the Twitter Red Carpet Era.
During the Twitter Red Carpet Era, the Twitter Crime Rate3 increased 66 percent, and continued to escalate reaching 12 percent in October 2009, indicating one in eight accounts created was deemed to be malicious, suspicious or otherwise misused and subsequently suspended.

“Attackers continue to be as opportunistic as ever. As soon as the Twitter user base and activity levels increased, hackers were prepared with novel attacks to compromise users,” said Dr. Paul Judge, chief research officer at Barracuda Networks. “As social networking, and specifically Twitter, becomes more ingrained in everyday business, it is crucial to understand the nature of attacks happening on these sites, as well as how users and networks can be compromised.”
The report also provides email and Web security insights that include:

Email-borne malware increased by threefold in the second half of 2009.
Jewelry spam grew by tenfold during the year mirroring the rising price of gold
Web exploit kits, rogue anti-virus and search result poisoning were the most popular classes of Web attacks.
